PLAYING JANSEN

I pretended to be someone else today. There was a focus group that my nephew couldn't attend (since he works full time) so he asked me if I was interested. For $200 cash, I was most definitely interested.

I arrived in Irvine with barely time to spare. I had a little trouble finding the place because Santa Ana and Irvine have street corners that are named exactly the same. They both have Macarthur and Main intersections, so it took me some time to realize I was in Santa Ana and not Irvine.

Upon arrival, I noticed I wasn't the most under dressed, so I immediately felt comfortable. There seemed to be a lot of Asians, but it is Orange County so I figured it was just the way it is. I had some breakfast which consisted of fruit and we began.

We were split into two groups of eleven people. It was a mock trial and we were the jury. We were given evidence from lawyers and viewed some depositions. We were given little remote controls that we had to use to answer some questions and indicate our general levels of interest in whatever we were presented.

After lunch, we were asked to render a verdict on the civil trial. Was the defendant liable for the plaintiff's indjuries? As we went around the table explaining how we felt, my heart started beating fast because I knew that I would be the only one who felt that the plaintiff was indeed liable. Everyone wanted to leave and the other jury made a quick decision that the defendant was not liable. So I felt guilty keeping everyone around because we took another two hours discussing why I felt that way.

I just could not see how the plaintiff could have sustained her injuries all of a sudden without something happening to her. Everyone else pointed to other facts that I felt were somewhat irrelevant. They were just circumstantial to me. What mattered to me was that something happened and I was not given any other possibilities as to what could have caused it.

In the end, I don't think I made any friends, but at least I got my cash and immediately spent it with a visit to Dinn's.
