JERSEY SHORE
Oh Jersey Shore, how I love thee, let me count the ways. Ok, so I'm no Shakespeare, but I'll tell you why I really like this show.
I'm a tv fan, but as we all know, there's a lot of junk out there. Like food, we can consume tv in very much the same way. We can choose to eat junk, or we can be picky and choose to eat healthy. I like both and I try not to indulge myself either way. I find that eating too much junk food can be bad for your tummy while eating too healthy, well, I guess there's really not that much damage that happens to you, but it sure is a pain in the ass.
Anyway, Jersey Shore is definitely junk. I don't think there's really anything healthy about the show. That is, there's not much good you can gain from watching it. You probably aren't going to learn much and what you do learn, you probably won't use.
However, I will argue that by the last episode of season 1, you will have experienced a pretty good level of entertainment and you'll feel pretty good about it too. Unlike junk food, you won't gain weight from watching Jersey Shore. Instead, you'll gain insight into what it means to be a family.
What? Jersey Shore can teach you something about family? Yup. Surprisingly, it actually does. See, what I've discovered about life is that family can be by blood and it can be by association. The mob calls itself a family and so do gangsters. You go through things with family, you disagree, you might argue and fight, but at the end of the day, you make-up and your relationship grows stronger.
I thought the makers of the Real World (Bunim-Murray Productions) were the ones that produced the show but they're not. It's 495 Productions known also for Tool Academy, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila and Dance Your Ass Off. How they pulled this off, I don't know. They make it look easy, but like a good recipe, it's not hard to make it taste good.
You've got 20-somethings that like to party, are full of themselves and cause a lot of drama. That's a simple recipe, ripped-off from the Real World and other shows like it. You've got to give them credit for casting some high maintenance guidos and guidettes because it would be easy not to like these people. But if you like to party, you can't help but respect these folks because they really know how to do it. So at times, I find myself wishing I could party as hard as they could, yet sadly knowing that there's no way I'd ever do that.
Jersey Shore is one of the highest rated programs for MTV so there's obviously something going on with the program. Just because a lot of people are watching it doesn't make it automatically good. But people I've spoken to aren't ashamed to admit watching it so it's quite different from other popular shows like The Hills.
My prediction is that the show will fade in popularity because how interesting can a show continue to be when the participants keep doing the same thing over and over again (just in different locations)? Time will tell if they can get past season 3, but I wouldn't bet on it.
