Chappelle's show season 2, episode 10 features an episode of Kneehigh Park, a parody of Sesame Street. One of my favorite muppets is Stinky the Bum likely voiced by Charlie Murphy. Here's the transcript.

Kids: Stinky the Bum!

Stinky: Fuck you too.

Boy: What's wrong Stinky?

Stinky: Besides living in a trash can and having a syringe lodged in my fuckin' head, nothing I guess. Where your parents anyway?

Boy #2: My mommy and daddy are at work.

Stinky: Oh yeah? Well me, I gave up working a long time ago.

Girl: Don't give up Stinky. My dad says if you never give up and work hard all your dreams will come true.

Stinky: That's the gayest shit I ever heard.

Girl: What?

Stinky (singing):
I don't believe your pappy.
He may be rich but he ain't happy.
Tells you about work and you want to be him,
but when's the last time you seen him?
He works hard. Why?
So you can go out and buy,
a bunch of shit that you don't need,

The Permission to be Human

Unconditional Acceptance
* Paradox - the more you suppress something, the worse that emotion can get
* Not resignation - not just accepting and not caring
* Active acceptance - feel the feeling and go ahead with it

Do we give ourselves and others - our family, students, friends, and colleagues - the permission to be human?

Dealing with Stress
Too much to do --> Stress (feeling overwhelmed? --> Depression

The Cost of Stress
* Psychological health - average age of onset of depression is 14
* Physical health - weak immune system due to stress
* Reduced productivity and creativity - stress causes us to narrow our focus

Simplify!
* Do less, not more (quantity affects quality) - imagine listening to your favorite songs all at the same time, it's just too much
* Reduce multi-tasking (quantity and quality)

Stress is not the problem . . . Lack of recovery is the problem
It's like working-out. Your muscles break-down, but get stronger with proper rest.

The need for multi-level recovery

Exercise: The Unsung Hero

* Left-to-right ration in prefrontal cortex - more activity in the left pre-frontal cortex means higher levels of happiness while more activity in the right means higher levels of sadness.
